Multimedia Storytelling exercise

I choose a multimedia story which is about International options, the theme is

Beijing Beat
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/world/interactives/beijingbeat/index.html?hpid=multimedia2&hpv=national

Explore the story and then consider the following:

  • How well does the site use navigation?

Then main navigation bar is on the top, each tab includes many details you can choose. Besides are tow image menus which are also navigation. It is very clearly.

  • How effectively is it designed?

Design is about layout, structure, texts, pictures and colours. All of these are related to usability.  This website layout is simple; video is in the middle with an introduction. Not too much text on this site, but many photos and videos has been provided.

  • How effectively does it use photos, graphics, broadcast and interactive elements? List the elements that are present.

Elements: videos, photos, no graphics. How to use these elements and interacts them. When you click a photo, it changes the video show. When you close it, it turns to homepage. At the bottom, there are several bar chart show population, migration and wages.

Broadcast: homepage focus on big buildings, animation repeat again and again,       so always it is boring.

  • How well are the stories written/presented/packaged?

Content is pretty good, because there are briefs not details written. People like to see videos not articles. Structure is simple, very easy to use. Stories are not all about news; some of them are about the people life style, the current information of the Beijing city. And some interesting things happened recently.

  • What did you love about it? Hate about it? Why?

I love the way of presents, the clear structure, its useability is good, and don’t let you lost in the website.

But I hate the pictures, why they don’t use some beautiful photos on it, and all the images are one style.
